Helene Emilie Agnes Friederike Adelaide von Haeseler
A letter from Helene to her nephew, Paul v. Haeseler. Written 20 April 1922.
"So herewith I send you a picture of your grandmother, nee Helene von Stralendorff. She died when she was 84 years old. We lived together at Merseburg and I nursed her until she died. . . . My father had 10 children. The oldest, Willy, the general in Schwerin, was by his first wife, nee Koster. By the second wife, nee Helene von Stralendorff 9 children.
1. Henriette who died when 15 years old.
2. I (Helene)
3. Auguste - she married a lawyer von Gersdorff, a very clever and smart lawyer and an awful spendthrift and he left his family without means. Willy took my poor sister and her children and provided for them. There were 12 children but only 4 are alive.
4. Agnes who was a teacher and now lives on a pension in Kösen.
5. Your father (Richard)
6. Adelaide, called Ady who was married to an Ober inspector of forests, Georg v. Wangelin. She died after giving birth to a little girl Erica. I nursed my sister Ady until she died and then became housekeeper at (the) von Wangelin's home. I brought up Erica as my own child. She became a remarkably handsome young woman and married a minister of State von Brandenstein. To my greatest despair and that of the whole family both are of pronounced communistic tendencies. Georg v. Wangelin had by his first wife 4 sons, who I have all brought up. The oldest son Richard fell in the war killed in one of the first battles. He was a Major and another died through sickness contracted during the war.
7. Gottlieb, he was minister of estates and while managing one married the only daughter. The estate is Kritzow in Meck. Later he sold and bought a larger one in East Prussia, which came near being destroyed by the invading Russians. He has two children a daughter, Annemaria who married a captain Heidemann and a son Willy. Willy married since this last Easter ('22) an American girl Elsa Schramm from Chicago.
8. Clara, married a brother of Georg von Wangelin, Karl von Wangelin who is also a forest inspector, a high position in Germany. But Clara also died at birth of a little girl named Adolphine but called Ady. She married a Captain von Stein, who contracted consumption during the war and died not long ago. They own a beautiful Ritter-gut. Ady who is very smart manages this estate herself. She has three sons.
9. Friedrich who was a few years in America. He is Electrical Engineer.
I am sending you a picture of Fieldmarshall von Hindenburg. I am friends with his sister Ida v. H. and she gave me this picture. I also send a picture of the former Kaiser and his wife Augusta, whom I have known personally. I also know the present Kaiser and his wife, with whom I often walked when we met at church at times when I was visiting at Exelling(?) von Lauer(?), Staff Physician of the Emperor. I was intimate friend of Mrs. von Lauer(?). Now they are all dead and I shall follow soon."
